Water4All

The Water4All Partnership – Water Security for the Planet is a funding programme for scientific research in freshwater. Its objective is to ensure long-term water security globally. According to a definition proposed by UN-Water in 2013, water security is “the capacity of a population to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human wellbeing, and socio-economic development, for ensuring protection against water-borne pollution and water-related disasters, and for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability”. The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the Water4All Partnership contains seven research themes:

  1. Water for circular economy: smart water value
  2. Water for ecosystems and biodiversity
  3. Water for the future: sustainable water management
  4. Water and health
  5. Water infrastructure
  6. International cooperation (cross-cutting issue)
  7. Governance (cross-cutting issue).

Water4All also offers a portfolio of additional activities to support the implementation of research projects, promote the utilisation of research results and boost the impact of research. The Partnership is coordinated by the French National Research Agency ANR. The Finnish participants are the Research Council of Finland, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Finnish Environment Institute. The Partnership includes 79 participating organisations from 31 countries. Three EU-wide networks are also involved.
