State of scientific research in Finland 2021

The Research Council of Finland reviews the state of scientific research in Finland in order to produce data to support the development efforts of higher education institutions and government research institutes and to strengthen the knowledge base available to science policy stakeholders. The materials produced include statistical and bibliometric analyses of research funding, research personnel and scientific publishing as well as analyses of specific themes.

Identifying research topics and collaboration networks in Finland using topic modelling on scientific publications in 2008–2019

This report, produced jointly by the Research Council of Finland and CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd, charts research topics studied in Finland using data-based topic modelling based on scientific publications recorded in the Web of Science database in 2008–2019. The purpose of the experimental analysis was to determine whether text mining and bibliometrics can be used to identify phenomena-based research topics and research cooperation associated with them.

Impact grows out of competence: Statistical analysis of PhD employment and placement

This statistical report provides an overview of PhD employment in R&D roles by employer sector and presents data for all employed PhDs by employer sector, gender, citizenship (Finland, other countries) and field of PhD degree and academic age. The data come from Statistics Finland and offer a revealing angle on the societal impact of PhD training. Trends in the number of PhDs and higher university degrees completed in different fields of education are described as background to the PhD placement statistics.
