South Africa

Since 2011, the Academy of Finland and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa have had a cooperation agreement to support high-quality Finnish-South African research and to increase cooperation between the countries’ researchers. The agreement makes it possible to fund joint calls, workshops and researcher mobility in all fields of science. The Academy and the NRF have so far launched two joint calls.

The Academy participates in LEAP-Agri, a network funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme that aims to promote and support research and innovation cooperation between the EU and Africa in food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture.  In 2017, LEAP-Agri opened a joint call under the theme “African European Collaborative Research on Sustainable Agriculture and Aquaculture and on Food and Nutrition Security”.

The Academy also participates in the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), a partnership programme between countries in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa and the European Union. EDCTP primarily aims to support collaborative research that accelerates the clinical development of new or improved drugs, vaccines and diagnostics to prevent or treat infectious diseases.
