The Academy of Finland as an agreement on funding cooperation with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). In addition, the Academy participates in a NordForsk-coordinated Nordic collaboration with the Japan Agency for Medical Development (AMED).

The cooperation with the JSPS covers all fields of research. Through the cooperation, the Academy and the JSPS provide support for researcher mobility and Finnish-Japanese joint seminars. Researchers with a doctoral degree can apply for the funding in September. Personal mobility funding can be applied for for research at Japanese universities and research institutes or for participation in a Finnish-Japanese seminar in Japan. Researchers can also apply for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships. The mobility funding is intended for the researcher’s own mobility costs (travel expenses and a grant that covers accommodation costs), not for research costs. Funding can also be applied for to cover reasonable costs of organising Finnish-Japanese seminars in Finland (rents, food and drinks, printing and mailing).

The Academy’s collaboration with AMED is aimed at supporting research cooperation in the field of medicine and health. NordForsk is coordinating a joint call between Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden and Norway) and AMED scheduled for 2021. The call will be announced later on the Academy’s website.
