Academy of Finland received more than 1,000 applications for new Academy Research Fellowships

Researchers submitted a total of 2,741 applications to the Academy of Finland’s funding calls in autumn 2022. The total number includes consortium subprojects as separate applications. If each consortium is counted as a single application, the total number of applications comes to 2,393.

This year’s autumn call included a revised funding scheme for Academy Research Fellowships. The Academy received 1,025 applications in the new scheme. The average funding applied for per application was 554,000 euros.

In this year’s application round, Academy Project funding was the most popular funding opportunity with 1,230 applications (1,321 applications in 2021).

The Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering received the most applications, 929 in total (1,134 in 2021). The Research Council for Culture and Society received 716 applications (840 in 2021) and the Research Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment received 748 applications (880 in 2021). In addition, there were 36 applications for funding for sport science research projects from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. These applications are reviewed in panels organised by the Academy’s Division of Biosciences, Health and Environmental Research.
