Research Council of Finland condemns harassment of researchers and RCF officials

27 Oct 2023

Researchers funded by the Research Council of Finland (RCF) have been subjected to inappropriate and offensive criticism on social media. This criticism contains elements of harassment, hate speech and online targeting and shaming. Even RCF officials have been subjected to similar harassment.

The RCF strongly condemns harassing and hostile comments directed at researchers or officials. Harassment and hate speech are intended to limit both the professional scope and freedom of expression of those working in research and research administration. This can have an adverse effect on social debate and democracy.

Harassing feedback and hostile comments also threaten scientific freedom. The RCF underlines that academic freedom is a fundamental principle in Finland, granting the research community the right to determine their own research subjects and themes. Academic freedom and open competition in science are core values in all democratic societies and must not be compromised under any circumstances.

The RCF allocates its research funding based on open calls and competition. International experts review the applications, elected representatives make the funding decisions, and RCF staff ensure the smooth running and high quality of the application and decision-making process.

The RCF calls on all members of society, citizens and supporters of science to work together to eliminate inappropriate and harassing discourse from all communication channels. Open communication about research and research funding must continue to be safeguarded. Debate on research topics is an important part of societal dialogue, but it should be grounded in facts and conducted with respect for others.
