Sustainable textile systems: Co-creating resource-wise business for Finland in global textile networks (FINIX)
Public description of the goals at the beginning of the project
The FINIX project will co-create new textile business in Finland in ways that promote global sustainable development. The dominant textile industry relies on low-quality products and fast-fashion business models. It is water, waste and pollution intensive, and takes land from food production. Manufacturing in low-cost countries frequently violates human rights, and results in lower than living level wages.
FINIX brings together large companies, SMEs, start-ups from textile, forest and waste management industries along with NGOs and policymakers, to co-create a more sustainable textile system with a solid scientific basis. Our emerging textile paradigm for circular economy comprises the use of fibres from recycled textiles, agriwaste and wood; design for different lifetimes; business models for long textile lifespans using durable materials and supportive services for sharing and repairing; and digital technologies for reverse logistics (traceability, recognition, sorting).
