Safe Water for All (WaterFall)

In a changing world, a well-functioning water supply cannot be taken for granted. Climate change, demographic changes, geopolitics and ageing infrastructure create challenges to Finland’s capability to provide safe drinking water for all.

The WaterFall project focuses on water security through resilience for water supply, from source to user. The consortium includes the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the Finnish Environment Institute, the University of Oulu, the University of Lapland, the National Defence University and Demos Helsinki.

The multidisciplinary study identifies and assesses the challenges related to drinking water through risk scenarios and addresses preventive measures to enhance the comprehensive security of water supply. WaterFall will combine GIS and data analysis, field studies, contamination data and legislative documents for a holistic multicriteria decision analysis.

The project aims to reinforce water utilities to anticipate challenges and make long-term decisions to secure sustainable drinking water production.
