Pandemics and Other Crises – Response and Preparedness (RESILIENCE) 2021–

The aim of the Academy Programme Pandemics and Other Crises – Responses and Preparedness (RESILIENCE) is to support and accelerate research into the COVID-19 pandemic and other societal crises and to support the utilisation of that research in society. A further aim is to support research on the mitigation of the effects of pandemics and other crises as well as crisis preparedness.

Through the programme the Academy of Finland wants to support high-level research with high potential for renewal and impact, promote national and international research collaboration and increase the societal impact of research through cooperation and programme services. The Academy further wants to bring attention to its role in funding research on this topic and support Finnish researchers in funding calls and in their work towards greater impact.

In 2020, the Academy of Finland has targeted research funding to research into the containment of the severe, global COVID-19 pandemic and the mitigation of its effects. In addition, funding has been provided for research into crisis preparedness and security of supply. The Academy has also participated in the funding of joint Nordic and Estonian COVID-19 research projects. Research into COVID-19 and pandemic and crisis preparedness has also been supported through other funding instruments, such as Academy Project and research infrastructure funding. In addition, the Strategic Research Council has initiated a a programme called Pandemics as a Challenge for Society.

The Pandemics and Other Crises – Responses and Preparedness programme comprises research projects that already have funding from previous calls.
