Proof of Concept Funding

The Proof of Concept funding scheme promotes the effective and versatile utilisation of research results and knowledge with the aim of achieving economic or other societal impact.

Proof of Concept funding seeks to ensure that ideas arising from research funded by the Research Council of Finland (RCF) and the Strategic Research Council (SRC) progress towards practical applications. The goal is to increase the economic and broader societal impact of research and to strengthen the skills and collaboration networks of researchers and research organisations in research utilisation.

The utilisation idea must arise from research previously funded by the RCF or the SRC. The benchmark for the scheme is the European Research Council’s Proof of Concept Grant. With this funding, researchers are encouraged, for example, to test research results in practical settings or to develop new operational models and tools for the needs of business and industry, public administration, or the third sector.

The Proof of Concept funding scheme was prepared through a pilot call in 2023 and has been continued with additional funding allocated by the Finnish Government for research and development. Ten million euros are reserved annually for the call. For the 2026 call, a two year funding authorisation will be used — a total of 20 million euros — and no call will be opened in 2027.
