Data dashboards

The dashboards provide key data on research funding granted by the RCF and the Strategic Research Council (SRC). The dashboards examine the impact of RCF funding, research themes and topics in funding applications submitted to the RCF, and winter call application and decision statistics.

We are working to expand the data contents and publish new dashboards on our funding and the outputs of the research we have funded.

The dashboard allows you to examine the impact of RCF funding. The data cover the contents of RDI policy from the perspective of RCF funding: where the funding is directed and what the funding is aimed at.

RCF funding supports research strengths.

You can examine the RCF’s overall funding portfolio and see how funding is allocated to support bold new research ideas and competence clusters and to fund research addressing societal challenges.
The dashboard also allows you to explore how the RCF has funded areas of strength in Finnish research and what the scientific impact of publications related to these areas is.

The dashboard allows you to examine the scientific impact of publications by funded researchers.
See how many of the researchers who have received ERC funding have previously received funding from the RCF or the SRC.

RCF-funded research increases competence and produces new top talents.

Examine how many research FTEs have been completed with RCF funding by nationality, gender and career stage.
You can view the number of doctoral degrees related to RCF-funded research and their proportion of all doctoral degrees completed in Finland.

RCF funding connects the best know-how and bold ideas to international networks.

See what kinds of cooperation networks RCF-funded Flagships, Centres of Excellence and research infrastructures have.
You can examine with which countries researchers from RCF-funded projects collaborate, which countries are visited, and which countries visit Finland, and with which countries Finnish researchers co-publish.

Through its funding and activities, the RCF supports responsible science.

Examine the proportion of open access scientific publications or how large a proportion of publications produced in RCF-funded research relate to the UN sustainable Development Goals.

The dashboard on research themes provides a phenomenon-based perspective on scientific research in Finland based on the topics and broader themes that emerge in applications for Academy Project and Academy Research Fellowship funding from the RCF. The dashboard allows you to view application numbers and funding granted by theme and topic.

The data in the dashboard are based on a topic modelling exercise covering approximately 23,800 Academy Project and Academy Research Fellowship applications from 2010 to 2022. The modelling was performed by CSC – the IT Centre for Science Ltd.

The dashboard on RCF winter call statistics provides statistical data on Academy Project and Academy Research Fellowship applications and on funded projects in different years. The data can be viewed by research organisation, scientific council and review panel. The funding scheme for Academy Research Fellowships was reformed in 2022; the statistical data on Academy Research Fellowships is therefore presented from the decision year 2023 onwards.

In addition, the dashboard provides background information on applicants and experts who reviewed the applications. The winter call review process and panel structure were reformed for the 2024 round; the statistical data related to application review is only presented from that application round onwards.

The RCF’s State of Scientific Research in Finland reviews were replaced by the data dashboards in 2025.

The reviews of the state of scientific research in Finland aimed to produce data to support the development efforts of higher education institutions and government research institutes and to strengthen the knowledge base available to science policy stakeholders. They were published in the form of statistical and bibliometric analyses on research funding, research personnel and scientific publishing. They also included analyses on specific themes.
