New biomarker for predicting progression of multiple sclerosis identified

New findings suggest that the thickness of the inflammatory cell rim surrounding brain lesions correlates with the severity and rate of progression of multiple sclerosis. The discovery was made at the University of Turku by a research group led by Professor Laura Airas, Research Group Leader at the InFLAMES Flagship. InFLAMES is a joint initiative of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University that aims to identify new drug targets and further drug development in collaboration with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. The Flagship also develops diagnostics that enable targeted therapies to be tailored to individual patients. InFLAMES is part of the Research Council of Finland’s Flagship Programme.
