The RCF’s funding portfolio can be divided into three categories, each with specific impact objectives. 

Spark – Novel and bold research ideas with long-term focus

The aim of the RCF funding category Spark is to ensure a high-quality scientific foundation for the Finnish research and innovation system now and in the future. Spark funding identifies researcher-driven bold research ideas and advances innovative, broad-based research in the long term.

Forge – Cutting-edge expertise for society’s benefit

The aim of the RCF funding category Forge is to pool together the best experts, ideas and tools. Forge funding strengthens existing and creates new internationally attractive research environments for scientific excellence that produce knowledge and expertise for use in society.

Shift – Solving societal challenges together

Shift is a funding category comprising RCF funding and funding provided by the Strategic Research Council. It seeks to solve societal challenges and promote the versatile use of research knowledge to benefit Finland and the world. Shift funding strengthens the societal impact of research by increasing interaction between knowledge producers and users and research and innovation funders.
