Research impact

Research makes a difference in society. Impact is a complex phenomenon that arises from the interaction between research data and other factors, often over a longer period of time.

Scientific research can have many different kinds of effects and impact depending on the discipline and the research organisation. Science has intrinsic value as the foundation of civilisation, and it is useful in many ways. Science creates a sound basis for sustainable welfare and wealth, informed decision-making, improved practices and better education.

Finland invests heavily in research, and the amount of research funding distributed through the RCF is also growing. These historical research investments are expected to benefit both people and the environment. Publicly funded research is increasingly expected to have a demonstrable impact.

Examine the impact of RCF funding in our data dashboards

We monitor the impact of RCF-funded research by various means and continuously develop our evaluation and reporting practices so that the effects of different fields can be demonstrated both quantitatively and qualitatively. We also monitor our own impact as a research funder. The RCF dashboards provide key data on research funding granted by the RCF and the Strategic Research Council (SRC).

Looking for information on RCF-funded research and researchers?

Research.fi is a service that collects and shares information on the Finnish research system, scientific publications by Finnish organisations and projects funded by public and private research funders. The service also contains statistical information on research personnel, research funding and scientific publishing. The service is based on a national research information hub, which pools data maintained by, for instance, universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutes and research funders in their own services.
