European University Institute (EUI)

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, opens annual calls for its four-year doctoral programmes within its four departments: History and Civilization, Economics, Law, and Political and Social Sciences.

The EUI works predominantly in English. Successful applicants to the EUI doctoral programmes are expected to work on their doctoral dissertations during the programme.

The EUI particularly supports international and comparative studies but the research need not focus on European history or society alone. The EUI offers graduate students a unique opportunity to study in an international setting with a multidisciplinary approach. Approximately 130 doctoral candidates are admitted to the EUI each year. The aim for Finnish universities is to secure places for 2–3 candidates.

The Research Council of Finland supports Finnish doctoral candidates at the EUI by means of scholarships worth 2,200 euros per month (€2,600 if the person has underage children).

The EUI can also enrol a few RCF-funded Academy Research Fellows to carry out research at the EUI for 1–2 years. This opportunity is applied for as part of RCF Academy Research Fellowship funding.
