Navigating the Route to Sustainable Water-Food Futures (Water&Food)

The project addresses challenges posed by climate change, unpredictable shifts in societal dynamics and their impacts on water and food security, livelihoods and ecosystems. It conducts multidisciplinary research to understand the underlying drivers of water scarcity and develops strategies to avoid it. It develops solutions to adapt to water and resource scarcity in crop and livestock production, evaluates environmental impacts of diets and novel foods and studies comparative advantages in agri-food trade. The project evaluates the adaptive capacity of consumers and other food system actors and develops long-term scenarios for food and water use at a global scale.

The project’s societal objective is to improve the resilience of those who face the consequences of a changing climate, societal turbulences and the scarcity of water and other resources. It uses the concept of ‘planetary boundaries’ for knowledge co-creation and engages stakeholders to communicate research findings effectively.
