Following the principles of peer review, we invite external experts to review the scientific quality and the innovativeness of submitted applications. In most cases, the review is finalised by expert panels. After receiving the reviews, the Academy’s research council members rank the proposals and make the funding decisions.
The decisions are primarily based on the results of the peer review, but they may also be influenced by issues of science policy, such as:
- promoting equal opportunities for both genders
- advancing early-career researchers’ careers
- supporting researcher mobility in Finland and abroad
- considering the economic, environmental, societal and technological impacts of research.
At all levels of the review process, we ask reviewers to pay attention to potential breakthrough research containing risks.
