International cooperation forms a natural part of research in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. The Research Council supports high-quality international research collaboration and researcher mobility with researcher-driven initiatives and through three funding schemes: Academy Project funding, funding for research post as Academy Research Fellow and funding for research post as Postdoctoral Researcher. In addition, the Research Council promotes international research cooperation in the context of the European Research Area, with the Nordic countries and with other international actors.
The Research Council stresses the importance of multinational funding cooperation in promoting research collaboration in the European Research Area. The Research Council supports collaboration primarily by participating in ERA-NET programmes, or similar initiatives, and their calls within strategically selected topics.
The Research Council also thinks that, while Europe is becoming more integrated than ever, Nordic cooperation still plays an important role. Nordic collaboration is supported primarily through NOS-N (Joint Committee of the Nordic Natural Science Research Councils) and NordForsk. The Research Council actively collaborates with the Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee as regards Nordic research infrastructures.
Research infrastructures are often of crucial importance in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. A large part of the Research Council’s international activities is therefore firmly linked to research infrastructures. The Research Council coordinates two international programmes related to research infrastructures: the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP) and the International Continental Scientific Programme (ICDP).
