HERA, Humanities in the European Research Area, is a network which aims at strengthening, funding and developing the evaluation of the humanities research in Europe. HERA network comprises 25 European research and funding organizations and the European Science Foundation, ESF. Two research programmes have been implemented within the network, the first under the themes of “Cultural Dynamics: Inheritance and Identity” and “Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation” (2010-2013), and the second under the theme of “Cultural Encounters” (2013-2016).

In early 2015, HERA launched a call for its third research programme under the theme of “Uses of the Past”. The total budget of the programme is approx. EUR 21 million, of which approx. EUR 4 million is covered by the European Commission via Cofund funding. The funding decisions of the programme will be made in February 2016. The research programme covers the period of 2016-2019. In the application phase the programme is coordinated by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, NWO. During the programme’s operational phase it will be coordinated by the Irish Research Council, IRC.
