The Academy of Finland joined the BiodivERsA network in June 2016. BiodivERsA is funded under the Horizon 2020 ERA-NET COFUND scheme. The network develops programming and funding cooperation on biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe. A particular objective of the network is to reach out to and engage policy-makers and to increase the societal relevance and impact of the research.
As a network member, the Academy of Finland is well poised to provide more opportunities for Finnish researchers to engage in international networking and to support national forums on biodiversity, such as the Nature Panel (the Finnish national IPBES panel), the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). BiodivERsA includes 35 organisations from 23 European countries.
By June 2016, BiodivERsA has co-funded seven joint calls with its partners (e.g. a call with FACCE JPI and two Cofund calls with the EU). Over 70 international projects have been granted funding for a total of €180M.
The Research Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment of the Academy of Finland is involved in funding the BiodivERsA call "Scenarios of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services" 2017-2018. This call is jointly launched and organized by the BiodivERsA and Belmont Forum networks. The main objective of the call is to promote scenario-based research on biodiversity, changes within biodiversity and the associated ecosystem services.
At the turn of the year 2018-2019, a total of 21 international consortia with ten Finnish consortium parties were funded. More information about the funded projects can be found on the BiodivERsA website.
