New version of Water JPI strategic research and innovation agenda adopted

3 July 2014

The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of the Joint Programming Initiative “Water challenges for a changing world” (Water JPI) provides a framework for future Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities and European investments in the water sector, which amount to more than 500 million euros per year.

The Water JPI SRIA lays out RDI needs grouped by thematic areas and priorities according to their scientific and societal importance. This document is essential to develop the long term vision of this EU intergovernmental initiative and to implement the alignment of all RDI activities among member countries. It is based on the previous version released in May 2013 and was updated through a participatory approach, which has involved the members of the Water JPI Advisory Boards, many national experts, the strategic agenda of partnering initiatives, policy documents and foresight studies and the public through an online consultation completed by 630 people.

New RDI needs and objectives have been identified through a comprehensive literature review of many information sources, including national RDI agendas, the strategic agenda of partnering initiatives, policy documents and foresight studies. A stakeholders consultative workshop, organised in Lyon on 3–4 April 2014, provided further information on scientific and technological outputs, trends, gaps and priorities in the water RDI domain.

The SRIA is structured around five core themes: Maintaining ecosystem sustainability; Developing safe water systems for the citizens; Promoting competitiveness in the water industry; Implementing a water-wise bio-based economy; and Closing the water cycle gap.

By focusing on tools and measures to provide effective solutions to these most relevant water challenges the SRIA intends to contribute to boosting the competitiveness and growth of the European water sector.
