Academy funding to nine new FiDiPro Professors
8 June 2010
The Board of the Academy of Finland has decided to fund nine new FiDiPro Professors (Finland Distinguished Professor) to be recruited by Finnish universities. Within the Academy’s FiDiPro call, now arranged for the third time, funding worth 10.5 million euros was granted for the work of foreign top-tier researchers in Finland for five years on average. The professors selected within this round of the FiDiPro programme will be based at the University of Helsinki, the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, and the University of Turku.
The professorships to be funded cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, with research topics such as the effects of fungi on crop plants and forest trees, the relations between the Ancient Near East and the West, the mechanisms underlying complex diseases, and the importance of aerosol particles on climate change. The projects are of a very high standard and based on multi- or interdisciplinary approaches. In addition, the selected FiDiPro Professors have established extensive international networks.
A total of 45 letters of interest for the FiDiPro programme were submitted within the Academy’s October call 2009. In December, the Academy Board decided to request full applications from 28 projects.
The Finland Distinguished Professor Programme (FiDiPro) is a joint funding programme of the Academy of Finland and Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. With funding from the programme, Finnish universities and research institutes can hire foreign or expatriate Finnish top researchers to work in Finland for a fixed period. The FiDiPro programme is aimed at achieving long-term international collaboration to strengthen Finnish scientific and technological knowledge and know-how. Tekes has also launched the FiDiPro Fellow programme, which is specifically targeted at young talented researchers.
So far, the FiDiPro programme has brought 53 FiDiPro Professors and seven Tekes-funded FiDiPro Fellows to Finland. The new FiDiPro Professors now selected are expected to start their work in Finland in September 2010 at the earliest. The FiDiPro funding programme was launched in 2006.
