Academy of Finland grants three million euros in funding to digital humanities research

15 Nov 2019

The Academy of Finland has selected five research consortia involving a total of 17 projects for funding under the second stage of the Digital Humanities (DIGIHUM) Academy Programme. The consortia will receive three million euros in research funding. The projects are scheduled for launch in January 2020.

The projects funded are concerned with exploring the diversity of Uralic languages; studying parliamentary politics and political culture; developing tools and solutions for the analysis of cybercrime; analysing Finnish film as big data; and developing digital tools for improving well-being in the workplace and organisational efficiency. All the research consortia taking part in the programme are multidisciplinary.

The DIGIHUM Academy Programme uses digital technology and methods of modern computational science to collect, manage and analyse data in humanities and social sciences research. An important part of the programme is to foster methodological development in these disciplines. Overall funding for DIGIHUM will amount to 8.7 million euros. The calls for proposals are organised in two stages. The programme was launched in 2016 and will run through to the end of 2022. In 2017 four Trans-Atlantic Platform projects were incorporated into the programme.

In 2019 there are 14 ongoing Academy Programmes. Academy Programmes are science-driven, thematic and target-oriented collaborations of research projects aimed at supporting scientific regeneration and bringing scientific and other impact. Academy Programmes support high-level multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, promote networking between researchers and provide a platform for international research cooperation.
