Academy of Finland funds international research collaboration in radiation detectors with two million euros

1 Nov 2019

The Academy of Finland has selected five new projects (with seven subprojects) to be funded in the call to promote international collaboration under the RADDESS Academy Programme (Radiation Detectors for Health, Safety and Security). In this call, projects were granted a total of two million euros in funding.

The projects study the manufacturing technology of x-ray sensors based on printed electronics, infrared imaging technology and infrared sensors based on nanotechnology, ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensors based on supraconductors, and corneal imaging in the millimetre and submillimetre range. Collaborating with Finnish researchers are research groups from the United States, Russia, Australia and Japan, among others.

The RADDESS Academy Programme provides funding to projects that study novel device-driven and functional radiation detection systems in areas of both health and safety.  The projects were granted a total of 12 million euros, of which two million euros were allocated to projects that promote international research collaboration. The funding period for the programme began in 2018 and it comes to a close at the end of 2022.

In 2019, the Academy funds fourteen Academy Programmes. Academy Programmes are science-driven, thematic and target-oriented bodies of research projects that are aimed at supporting scientific regeneration and increasing scientific and other impact. Academy Programmes support multi- and interdisciplinary research of the highest quality, promote networking between researchers and provide a platform for international research cooperation. Academy Programmes create scientific and societal impact.
