All funding decisions concerning the Academy of Finland’s September 2017 call have now been made. The total funding for Academy Projects and research posts as Academy Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Researcher amounted to 154 million euros.

The Academy granted 98 million euros in Academy Project funding, 28.5 million euros in Academy Research Fellow funding, 25 million euros in Postdoctoral Researcher funding and 2.3 million euros in funding for clinical researchers.

These funding schemes attracted a total of 2,808 applications. Funding was granted to 397 researchers or research teams, which puts the application success rate at 14 per cent. The figures do not include applications by consortium subprojects.

The funding for research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher supports the most talented researchers who have recently completed their doctoral degree in gaining competence for demanding researcher or expert positions. A post as Academy Research Fellow provides a researcher with a good and diverse opportunity to work independently on their research and to contribute to developing the research in their field.  The Academy Project funding scheme is designed to promote the quality and diversity of research, scientific impact and impact beyond academia as well as science self-renewal.

The Academy of Finland grants funding for excellent, innovative research that is aimed at scientific breakthroughs. The funding is based on open competition and international peer review. High-level international peer review is the Academy of Finland’s key tool for identifying the best and most promising research projects. The funding decisions on Postdoctoral Researchers, Academy Research Fellows and Academy Projects are made by the Academy’s research councils based on peer review reports.
