Funding granted to 11 Academy Research Fellows in biosciences and the environment

At its meeting on 20 March 2014, the Academy of Finland’s Research Council for Biosciences and Environment decided to fund eleven research posts as Academy Research Fellow. The funding period will start in September 2014.
Within the 2013 September call, the Research Council received a total of 87 applications for funding for research posts as Academy Research Fellow. Women accounted for 50.5 per cent and foreign nationals for 24 per cent of the applicants. The success rate was roughly 13 per cent, and the total sum granted towards the salaries of Academy Research Fellows was some EUR 4.8 million.
The funding for Academy Research Fellows is granted for five years. The funding is intended to advance and strengthen the opportunities of the best advanced researchers to qualify themselves for academic leadership and establish themselves as independent researchers. The reviewers also pay attention to the career advancement of talented researchers.
The funding recipients are: Nicolas Di-Poi (University of Helsinki), Lutz Fromhage (University of Jyväskylä), Kati Hanhineva (University of Eastern Finland), Merja Heinäniemi (University of Eastern Finland), Heidi Hellén (Finnish Meteorological Institute), Tarmo Ketola (University of Jyväskylä), Karoliina Koho (University of Helsinki), Aleksi Lehikoinen (University of Helsinki), Annika Meinander (Åbo Akademi University), Ulla Pentikäinen (University of Jyväskylä) and Michael Wrzaczek (University of Helsinki).
