MICROBES AND MAN RESEARCH PROGRAMME - MICMAN
2003-2005
Microbes and Man Research Programme was a three-year programme during 2003-2005. 15 projects were funded with the budget of 5,4 million euros. The programme was implemented in Finnish-Swedish collaboration.
Objectives
The main objective of the Microbes and Man Research Programme was to increase our understanding and knowledge of the interaction between host and microbes, and to apply this knowledge to the maintenance of health and prevention and treatment of diseases.
Themes
The themes of the projects covered the following fields:
- The development, composition and health effects of the resident microflora under the influence of both host and environmental factors (pathogens and probiotics)
- The host-microbe interactions in the development and course of diseases and their sequelae
- Bioinformatics; environmental microbes
Newly developed technologies with rapidly increasing ranges of application have completely transformed microbiological research and the rest of the field of the biosciences. The novel technologies were widely used in the projects of the programme.
Extent
The programme funded 15 projects: 5 Finnish-Swedish consortia, 2 Finnish consortia and 8 individual Finnish projects.
Funding
The programme was funded and implemented jointly by the Academy of Finland and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The total budget of the programme was EUR 5,4 million. The share of the Academy of Finland was EUR 4.1 million and that of the the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research EUR 1,3 million. The aim of the international collaboration was to promote networking and training of researchers as well as to increase scientific quality and international visibility of this research in both countries and internationally.
