EVALUATION OF THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME FOR RUSSIA AND EASTERN EUROPE 1995-2000

PANEL REPORT

The Academy of Finland’s research programme for Russia and Eastern Europe which comprised 28 research projects during 1995-2000 has been evaluated. The evaluation showed that this research programme has laid the foundations for further development. The programme was started at a time when many believed that the need for knowledge of Russia was in decline. The evaluation panel recommends continuation of the research programme. The need for knowledge and understanding of Russia, in the context of political, economic and social change in Europe is becoming greater than ever.

Suomen Akatemian toteutti vuosina 1995-2000 Venäjän ja Itä-Euroopan tutkimusohjelman, johon kuului yhteensä 28 tutkimushanketta. Tutkimusohjelman onnistumista on arvioinut kansainvälinen paneeli. Arviointi osoitti, että ohjelma on luonut pohjan jatkotutkimuksille. Ohjelma käynnistettiin aikana, jolloin Venäjän tutkimuksen tarve oli monien mielestä selvästi vähentynyt. Arviointipaneeli suositteleekin ohjelmalle jatkoa. Tiedon ja ymmärtämisen tarve Venäjästä on tullut Euroopan poliittisessa, taloudellisessa ja yhteiskunnallisessa muutoksessa entistä tärkeämmäksi.
