The striking characteristics of Russian economic development since the beginning of 1990s has been her crucial dependence of large (old) enterprises and the non-existence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is generally acknowledged fact that in order to maintain sustainable growth path the involvement of SMEs is of the utmost importance. However, from the turn of the century, Russia has enjoyed accelerated economic growth, and large number of new fast growing and competitive firms have emerged.
The main objective of this research is to analyse on one hand the success factors of Russian companies established after 1991 and on the other hand the capabilities of Finnish companies to respond to the new challenges like increasing competition at the Russian market. The objective is to explore Russian companies from the Finnish companies' viewpoint both as potential competitors and business parnters and also to create new business models to the Finnish companies for the Russian market. The research project focuses on three sectors: food industry, ICT and logistics as well as on the development of collaboration between companies in South-East Finland and North-West Russia.
The research project will concentrate on the following research topics:
1) Competitiveness of the new Russian companies - business models and structure of the competitiveness factors in three sectors under surveillance
2) Future operation models - threats and opportunities of the new successful Russian companies for Finnish companies
3) Collaboration possibilities for enterprises in South-East Finland and North-West Russia - co-operation and subcontracting
