On Thursday 15 October 2015, following the Strategic Research Council’s (SRC) initiative, the Finnish Government reached a decision on four themes for strategic research for 2016.
The selected themes are:
- Knowledge, know-how and the changing working life
- Health and the changing of lifestyles
- Overall security in a global environment
- The dynamics of urbanisation.
Based on these themes, the SRC expects to have the new funding programmes and the call launch-ready in early November 2015. The call will be open for about five weeks, and the guidelines will be published when the call opens. The call will be implemented in two stages. The first stage, the call for letters of intent, will be the lighter stage. Applicants will be requested to submit six-page plans of intent, which the SRC will then review to select projects for the second call stage. The projects selected to go through to the second stage will be asked to submit extensive research and interaction plans.
In connection with the call, the SRC may also open a supplementary call within the funding programme A Climate-Neutral and Resource-Scarce Finland. The SRC feels that the research covered by the four research consortia currently included in the programme still has a few blind spots that could be filled. The SRC is therefore planning to fund one or two additional projects within the programme. This supplementary call will be two-stage as well.
The SRC will make the decisions on the new programmes, the supplementary call and the exact call schedule in its meeting on 2 November 2015.
