Biosciences and environmental research is of a highly international nature. The Research Council for Biosciences and Environment therefore strongly recommends that international research collaboration be an essential part of all scientific activity. The Research Council’s funding is targeted at internationally competitive research with a view to promoting the opportunities of Finnish researchers to engage in successful, high-impact research at an international scale. The Research Council is actively and proactively engaged in the preparation of international research programmes as well as in various international working groups, committees and organisations.
The Research Council is also keen to actively influence the objectives and work programmes of the Societal Challenges section of Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (especially the challenges "Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the bioeconomy” and “Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials”). In addition, the Research Council participates in Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NETs and programmes by NordForsk.
