The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international organisation established through the OECD Science Forum with a view to making the world’s scientific biodiversity data freely and universally available through the internet and facilitating its digitalisation.
The GBIF portal includes (as of April 2015) more than 500 million records of biodiversity data, of which some 20 million records are from Finnish data providers. This makes Finland the sixth most active data provider.
The Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF) collects biodiversity data from Finland in one centralised place. FinBIF will be set up between 2015 and 2017 coordinated by the Finnish Museum of Natural History.
The Academy of Finland pays an annual funding contribution to GBIF and works to promote the implementation of the GBIF’s objectives in Finland.
