The Academy of Finland has signed agreements on cooperation with three Indian research funding organisations: the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Tooltech Ltd. The agreements do not cover research fields in the social sciences and humanities.
The goal of the collaboration is to support researcher mobility and joint projects and to organise workshops to prepare call themes.
Based on the above agreements, the Academy provides funding to Finnish researchers for research in India and vice versa. The funding is open for application in connection with the Academy’s September call.
The Academy has organised joint calls with the DBT since 2006:
- 2012: Synthetic biology (as part of the FinSynBio Academy Programme)
- 2011: Food sciences
- 2009: Medical diagnostics
- 2008: Environmental biotechnology
- 2007: Plant and crop biotechnology
- 2006: Medical biotechnology: diagnostics, drug development and vaccine research
Joint calls with the DST:
- 2014: Energy research (as part of the New Energy Academy Programme)
- 2011: Materials research (as part of the Programmable Materials Academy Programme)
- 2010: Green chemistry

Other bilateral cooperation
As part of an extensive Finnish science, research and business delegation, the Academy has participated in India’s largest technology event (Technology Summit & Technology Platform) and in follow-up meetings for the implementation of the science and technology agreement between Finland and India.
Collaboration between the EU and India
The Academy participated in joint calls within the New Indigo ERA-NET (2009–2013) and is currently a partner in the successor project, the INNO INDIGO ERA-NET. The Academy opened a water-research-related networking call under the AKVA Academy Programme in 2012 and an energy-related joint call under the New Energy Academy Programme in 2014. See the programme websites for information on funded projects.
The Academy is also a partner in the EU-India Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities (EqUIP), a project funded by the European Commission bringing together research funding and research support organisations in Europe and India in order to develop a stronger strategic partnership in the social sciences and humanities.
