The EU Joint Programming Initiative “Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe (JPI Climate) aims to integrate European climate change science and connect it to efforts in Europe to be both climate-friendly and climate-proof by coordinating and developing excellent science, industrial leadership and transnational collaboration to enforce the European response to one of the great societal challenges of our time.
JPI Climate is built upon four themes as defined in the Strategic Research Agenda:
- Improving climate projections
- Climate services
- Societal transformation
- Decision‐support tools.
The first JPI Climate funding call was opened in autumn 2013. The initiative involves 14 member countries.
Finland is represented in the JPI Climate Governing Board by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Academy of Finland. Besides these two Finnish agencies, the Letter of Intent for the initiative has also been signed by the Ministry of the Environment. The Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Helsinki participate in the coordination of the initiative, which also includes many other Finnish universities, research institutes and researchers.
