The NORFACE ERA-NET project (New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe), which ran until the end of 2009, was a partnership between twelve research councils to increase cooperation in research and research policy in Europe. NORFACE was coordinated by the Academy of Finland. The twelve partners involved were the research councils for the social sciences from Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK. Canada participated in NORFACE as an associate partner. The total budget for the five project years was EUR 3.3 million.
NORFACE was an ambitious programme of communication, enquiry, sharing of experience and action with a view to developing cooperation in research funding. In addition, NORFACE carried out three calls for seminar series and a call for a pilot research programme. Based on the experiences gained, NORFACE launched a full-scale transnational research programme in 2008 (Migration in Europe – Social, Economic, Cultural and Policy Dynamics). The projects of the research programme started in August 2009 and will run through 2013. The EU also provides funding to NORFACE through the NORFACE Plus project, with some EUR 6 million in additional funding. NORFACE Plus is coordinated by the Academy of Finland.
The work of the NORFACE network will continue under the coordination of NWO in the Netherlands. The network has received core funding from the EU Seventh Framework Programme for 18 months between 2010 and 2012. During this time, the focus will be on planning a pan-European researrch programme and promoting the joint European use of research infrastructures in the social sciences, especially in research on migration.
