The Academy of Finland, Tekes and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs organised the Arctic Know-How as Strength seminar on 18–19 March 2015.
The seminar was the kick-off for the Arctic Academy Programme and Tekes’ Arctic Seas Programme. The seminar was opened by Mr Heikki Mannila, President of the Academy of Finland. The first session was dedicated to the Arctic policy of the European Union. In their speeches, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Erkki Tuomioja, Ambassador, Mr Hannu Halinen, and Ms Zuzanna Bieniuk, Arctic Cooperation Policy Officer at the European External Action Service, addressed the challenges and perspectives of EU Arctic policy.
The programme also included keynote speeches by the Ambassador of Canada in Finland, Ms Andrée Cooligan, Professor Peter Wadhams (Cambridge University) and Senior Researcher Christos Chryssakis (DNV GL). The research projects funded by the Academy of Finland and Tekes were showcased with posters and with several joint oral presentations during the two-day seminar. A stakeholder panel, chaired by Professor Mari Walls, discussed how to develop Arctic know-how in Finland.
The goal of the seminar was to introduce the new Arctic research projects and to facilitate networking between researchers, end-users and stakeholders.
The seminar was attended by 297 participants in total.
