Professor Johanna Niemi (University of Turku) is appointed to the Minna Canth Academy Professorship. Her main research interest lies in how notions of gender and its meaning have changed. Young adults in particular live in an environment today where life choices are fraught with gender-related and contradictory expectations.
Professor Niemi’s research combines attention to methodological questions of jurisprudence with the reconciliation of work and the family, criminal policy and crime investigation. She is keen to understand how changes in notions of gender are reflected in justice and in studies of law, and on the other hand how gender is involved in the traditionally male-dominated field of criminal investigation.
The work of Johanna Niemi is considered theoretically and methodologically highly innovative and it is expected to bring gender studies and jurisprudence closer together and increase understanding and knowledge production in both fields of study. Niemi is interested in exploring the legal praxis related causes of inequality and marginalisation, and she offers alternative solutions to changing the gendered practices of criminal policy and crime investigation.
