Academy Professor Elina Ikonen (University of Helsinki) has made a number of significant scientific breakthroughs in cholesterol research. In her research project, Ikonen will investigate how cholesterol behaves in cell membranes, both under normal conditions and in human cholesterol-related diseases. The project aims to uncover novel mechanisms that dictate the distribution of cholesterol in cells, within cellular membranes, and cellular responses elicited upon cholesterol loading. Ikonen’s team will utilise their own new techniques to visualise lipids, in particular cholesterol, in living cells and tissues.

Elina Ikonen is a world-leading researcher in her own particular field. Her research is both forward-thinking and significant for public health reasons. In the long term, the methods developed in Ikonen’s research can contribute to the individual assessment, monitoring and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, for instance. Ikonen also heads the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Biomembrane Research, which is funded by the Academy of Finland.
