Koenderink Prize 2014 to University of Oulu's computer vision scientists
The 2014 Jan Koenderink Prize has been granted to University of Oulu Professor Matti Pietikäinen, Academy Research Fellow Abdenour Hadid and University of Oulu alumni, Dr Timo Ahonen (Nokia Research Center).
The prize recognises fundamental contributions in computer vision. It is awarded biennially at one of the most prestigious conferences in the field, the European Conference on Computer Vision, for a paper published exactly ten years ago at this venue that has stood the test of time. This time two papers were acknowledged.
The awarded publication presents automatic face recognition with local binary patterns, a methodology developed at the University of Oulu, Finland. This approach is currently regarded as one of the major milestones in face recognition research.
The conference publication and its extension to a journal article have already been cited more than 3,000 times according to Google Scholar.
