The Academy of Finland has decided to grant funding to five Finnish subprojects under ERANet-LAC’s (Network of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Countries on Joint Innovation and Research Activities) second international joint call.

The Academy co-funded four themes of the network’s second joint call:

  • Ecosystem-based adaptation and resilience (Theme 1)
  • Biorefinery – Fractionation and valorization of residual biomass to intermediate and/or final high added value bioproducts (Theme 3)
  • Wind Energy – Advancement of Small/Medium-Scale Wind Turbines in EULAC Countries (Theme 5)
  • Solar Thermal Energy – Energy Storage Technologies (Theme 6).

A total of 39 Finnish subprojects applied for funding under the joint call. Fourteen applications were coordinated by a Finnish researcher.

The Academy’s general subcommittee granted 29th November 2016 funding to one Finnish project under Theme 1 from funds earmarked by the Academy’s Research Council for Biosciences and Environment:

  • Geographic Variation in the Impacts of Land Use Changes on Ecosystem Stability (GILES); coordinator: Professor Mikhail Kozlov, University of Turku

The New Energy subcommittee granted 1st December funding to three Finnish projects under Theme 3:

  • Valorization of Residual Biomass for Advanced 3D Materials (ValBio3D); PI of Finnish subproject: Principal Scientist Tekla Tammelin, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd
  • Towards a Novel and Sustainable Biorefinery Concept Based on Green Technologies for Main Commercial Grain Crop Residues; coordinator: Associate Professor Henrikki Liimatainen, University of Oulu
  • Biorefining of Citrus Processing Waste (CPW); coordinator: Principal Scientist Peter Richard, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd
