Demand for Academy funding remains at last year’s level

The Academy of Finland’s September 2014 call closed this Wednesday, attracting 3,482 applications for funding. Application numbers remained at about the same level as in last year’s call, when the Academy received 3,514 applications.
Applications poured in especially within the Academy Project scheme, with a total of 1,359 applications received (2013: 1,348). The Academy’s grants to individual researchers were also popular funding opportunities. Altogether 139 applicants (2013: 149) applied for funding for a research post as Academy Professor, 591 applicants (2013: 568) for funding for a research post as Academy Research Fellow and 1,072 applicants (2013: 1,013) for funding for a research post as Postdoctoral Researcher.
Of the Academy’s four research councils, the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering received most applications, 1,275 (2013: 1,273), followed by the Research Council for Culture and Society with 991 applications (2013: 1,012). The Research Council for Biosciences and Environment received 579 applications (2013: 586) and the Research Council for Health 535 applications (2013: 544). The funding decisions will be made in April–June 2015. The detailed decision schedules will be available on our website later this year.
