CoE applicants to second application stage selected

6 Nov 2012

The Board of the Academy of Finland has selected the research teams that will proceed to the second stage of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) call. In all 34 research teams are asked to submit their full applications. These detailed applications shall be submitted to the Academy by 21 January 2013. The Academy Board will decide in June 2013 on the teams to be included in the CoE programme 2014–2017.

At the first stage of the two-stage call for funding, the Academy received a total of 128 plans of intent covering a wide range of disciplines and research fields. The plans of intent were reviewed by international experts. The Academy Board has earmarked a total of EUR 45 million in funding for the first three-year term of the 2014–2019 CoE programme.

Centres of Excellence in Research reinvigorate scientific research and knowledge. CoE funding is intended for research teams and consortiums of research teams for carrying out cutting-edge scientific research. A CoE is an innovative and target-oriented research environment that conducts internationally leading-edge research. It is a professionally led body with a clear and challenging research vision. A CoE is competitive in its efforts to apply for international research funding.

Besides the Academy of Finland, universities, research institutes, other funding bodies, foundations and business companies also contribute to the contractual funding of CoEs. There are currently two ongoing Finnish CoE programmes (2008–2013 and 2012–2017), in which funding is provided to 33 CoEs.
