Academy funds twelve new FiDiPro Professors
5 June 2012
The Board of the Academy of Finland has decided to fund twelve new FiDiPro (Finland Distinguished Professor) Professors to be recruited by Finnish universities. Within the Academy’s FiDiPro call, funding worth EUR 10 million has been granted for the work of foreign top-tier researchers in Finland for a period of five years on average. The new FiDiPro Professors will be based at Aalto University, the Universities of Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Tampere and Turku and at Tampere University of Technology.
The professors to be funded represent a wide range of scientific disciplines, with research topics such as the use of nanoparticle catalysis in solar cells, Russian political system, inverse problems, kidney development, and cell trafficking in lymphatic vessels. The selected FiDiPro Professors are internationally highly merited researchers in their own fields.
The Academy’s fourth FiDiPro call attracted a total of 43 letters of intent. The Academy Board selected 27 applicants to proceed to the second application stage; 26 of them submitted a full application. FiDiPro applications are peer-reviewed by esteemed foreign researchers.
Within FiDiPro, the Academy funds leading-edge researchers who will primarily be based in scientifically significant and strategic key areas at universities and research institutes. Applications are filed by a university or research institute.
The Finland Distinguished Professor Programme (FiDiPro) is a joint funding programme of the Academy of Finland and Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, launched in 2006. With funding from the programme, Finnish universities and research institutes can hire foreign or expatriate Finnish top researchers to work in Finland for a fixed term. The FiDiPro programme is aimed at achieving long-term international research collaboration with a view to strengthening Finnish scientific and technological knowledge and know-how. Tekes also has the FiDiPro Fellow funding scheme, which is specifically targeted at young researchers.
So far, the FiDiPro programme has brought 83 FiDiPro Professors and 13 FiDiPro Fellows to Finland. The FiDiPro Professors who now received funding are expected to start their work in Finland in autumn 2012 at the earliest.
