MICROBES AND MAN RESEARCH PROGRAMME - MICMAN
2003-2005

Microbes and Man Research Programme is a three-year programme during 2003-2005. With the budget of 5,4 million euros 15 projects are funded. The programme is implemented in Finnish-Swedish collaboration.


Aims
The main objective of the Microbes and Man Research Programme is to increase our understanding and knowledge of the interaction between host and microbes, and to apply this knowledge to the maintenance of health and prevention and treatment of diseases.

Content
The themes of the projects cover the following fields:

  • The development, composition and health effects of the resident microflora under the influence of both host and environmental factors (pathogens and probiotics)
  • The host-microbe interactions in the development and course of diseases and their sequelae
  • Bioinformatics; environmental microbes

Recently developed technologies with rapidly increasing ranges of application have completely transformed microbiological research and the rest of the field of the biosciences. The novel technologies are widely used in the projects of the programme.

The programme is funded and  implemented jointly by 

The total budget of the programme is 5,4 million euros. The share of the Academy of Finland is 4.1 million euros and that of the the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research 1,3 million euros. The aim of the international collaboration is to promote networking and training of researchers as well as to increase scientific quality and international visibility of this research in both countries and internationally.
