Academy Professor Jussi Kukkonen conducts research into the impact of natural organic matter on aquatic systems, on the molecular level as well as considering the entire water ecosystem. Kukkonen's research team focuses on both the environmental fate of foreign matter and environmental stress factors. The research effectively makes use of the newest methods in bioinformatics and genomics. A particular area of expertise for the team is sediment toxicology. Jussi Kukkonen earned his PhD at the University of Joensuu in 1992 and was appointed Professor in Biology, especially Ecotoxicology at the University in 1998.
