The Academy of Finland has agreements on funding cooperation with two Japanese research funding organisations: the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Cooperation with the JSPS covers all scientific fields. Cooperation is designed to support joint projects in addition to researcher mobility and seminars. Calls for joint projects are carried out every even year and the theme of the call is different in each call.
In addition to the Academy, Tekes also participates in cooperation with the JST, and joint calls are arranged together in the field of research of functional materials. Joint calls in this field were arranged in October in 2009 and 2010. Each call is defined more narrowly within the theme each year.
The Academy also has active contacts with the Finnish Institute in Japan, the FinNode Innovation Centre in Tokyo, and the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP). The Academy and Tekes have an agreement on cooperation with the NISTEP on science policy exchange of information.
