Strategically targeted research funding must respond to the needs of society

“An important aspect of strategically targeted research funding is to improve the dialogue and facilitate new interactions between policy-makers and researchers. There should be close links between research and society at large. The success of a strategic research funding instrument depends heavily on these connections. We need good interactions both during and after the research,” says Per Mickwitz, chair of the Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland and research director at the Finnish Environment Institute.
