About the Competition

All students who are studying in Finnish senior secondary schools at the time of the closing date for submitting competition entries are eligible to participate. Likewise, Finnish students who are studying in foreign senior secondary schools at the time of the closing date for submitting competition entries are eligible to participate. Those who take part in the competition must not be simultaneously registered at any university; however, it is possible to prepare competition entries in cooperation with a university, research institute, community or business company.

The competition has two equal categories:
- Students studying for the national matriculation examination, and
- Students studying for the International Baccalaureate examination

Students studying for the national matriculation examination are eligible to take part only in the national category and students studying for the International Baccalaureate examination (or other special examination) are eligible to take part only in the international category. Prizes are awarded to the 5–7 best entries in both categories.

Entries in the form of essays may be submitted on an individual or pair basis or be a group work of a maximum of five senior secondary students. Each student can take part in the competition only once. The report with possible appendices, tables and pictures must not exceed 10–30 A4 pages (approx. 30 lines per page). All entries shall be submitted in the Finnish, Swedish or English language. The competition is open for entries from all scientific disciplines. The basis for the work may be an essay written for senior secondary school.
