European agriculture and food security: FACCE – JPI launches its first European project

Today, FACCE - JPI announced the approval for funding of its first joint action. This action brings together 67 research groups from 17 countries and aims to improve the characterisation of European food security due to climate change and to enhance adaptation capacity through improvements in modeling of impacts of climate change. This ambitious project has estimated total costs of around 15 million €.

Centres of Excellence 2014–2019: call for letters of intent in April 2012

The next Programme for Centres of Excellence in Research will run between 2014 and 2019. The call for letters of intent to the new programme will open in connection with the Academy’s April 2012 call, which opens on 2 April. Units selected to the second round of application will be requested to submit their full applications between December 2012 and January 2013. The Academy Board will decide on the new centres in June 2013.

New experimental method for studying defects in crystal lattices

Academy Research Fellow Filip Tuomisto and researcher Jussi-Matti Mäki have developed a new experimental technique that can be used for studying opto-electronically active materials. Light-emitting diodes can be made more efficient by reducing lattice defects in the starting materials. In collaboration with the DTC Research Centre (UK), the method was used to solve the mystery of the brown colour in natural diamond.

Science Europe is a newly established association of European research performing organisations and research funding organisations. A research team headed by Professor David Leigh of the University of Edinburgh (UK) and Academy Professor Kari Rissanen of the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) have made the most complex molecular knot to date, as reported in Nature Chemistry. This is the view being put forth by the Joint Committee of the Nordic Medical Research Councils (NOS-M), which is comprised of representatives from the Nordic research councils. In a strategy memo presented recently, the joint Committee identified two areas in which there is great potential for strengthening Nordic medical research cooperation: biobanks and clinical research.
