Bibliometric indicators
Bibliometric methods have gained an established position in the evaluation of scientific impact during the past ten years. They are based on the use of publication and citation data. The Academy has used these methods since the late 1990s in its reviews of the state and quality of Finnish scientific research.
Bibliometric methods can be used to support evaluations, to inspire science policy debate and to formulate questions for the identification of challenges. Bibliometric indicators are a useful tool for quantitative descriptions of the results and effectiveness of research, collaboration among researchers and the visibility, impact and quality of research.
The Academy report Finnish Science in International Comparison: A Bibliometric Analysis compares the outputs and visibility, scientific impact and quality of research in Finland and other OECD countries based on publishing activities over the past 20 years. The report examines the structure and level of publishing in Finland by sector, organisation and major fields of science.
